  • Steve Nemsick / Director

Award winning filmmaker Steve Nemsick has traveled the world with his camera filming a vast array of people. Nemsick is a “soup to nuts” filmmaker capable of fulfilling every role of the process.

Nemsick’s first film - Pray For Me, The Jason Jessee Film was a biography about one of skateboardings about a legendary skateboarder.

Much Ado In Mostar was Nemsick’s film about a war torn city in Bosnia, that is deeply divided along ethnic/religious lines. But in the summer, one man brings together high schoolers from “both sides of the river” to perform Shakespeare.

    Director’s Statement

Every filmmaker hopes to find that one story they have to tell. This is mine.

In 2020, my family joined the great COVID migration out of New York City and settled on a quiet street in New Jersey. While organizing our first block party, I met my 92-year-old neighbor, Maxine Giannini. She sat my son at her piano and played Clair de Lune. Behind her, the walls were covered in extraordinary paintings and then I saw her book: Drawing D-Day: An Artist’s Journey Through War.

It told the story of her late husband, Ugo, a WWII hero and reclusive painter who studied under Fernand Léger and was the only artist to draw the D-Day landing from the first assault wave on Omaha Beach. His letters home rival Hemingway and Fitzgerald in their humanity and craft.

At the time, I had two young sons, a fixer-upper, and no reason to start a documentary. But Ugo’s dying wish was for his story, a soldier’s story, to be told. Through his art, and through Maxine’s irrepressible joie de vivre, emerged something larger: an American love story between two extraordinary people from different worlds, united by courage, conviction, and creativity.

For two years I filmed alone, without funding. Today, with a remarkable producing team, we’re bringing Ugo’s legacy and Maxine’s light to the screen.
